New to JANBA

For those of you new to JANBA (Japanese American National Bowling Association), the tournament is a week-long tournament, but you can enter events for only 1 day or as many as 5 days — it's up to you. The tournament runs every year in a different city in the first FULL week of March. Ragtime doubles kicks off the tournament on Sunday night.

Good to know

Scratch, divisions and the Overall Champion

The tournament is scratch, but you are scheduled and will bowl against and with bowlers in your same average group. The idea is to win or cash in your division, and if you win that and you are high over all of the divisions, you can be declared the JANBA champion of the main board and declared the "Overall Champion" — which is quite an honor!

Squad times

You don't ask for squad times; you will be assigned a squad time based on your average (or your team's average in non-singles events). You will get a schedule weeks prior to the tournament — just make sure you save the whole day in case you aren't sure what time you will bowl.

Getting there, and the banquet

Just be flexible, and plan to get there the day before the event. Since the main events are team, singles and doubles, you can bowl those on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Saturday night is the Awards Banquet, where all awards are presented and unclaimed prize money can be picked up. It's really a lot of fun at the banquet, so attend — it's the last time you see everybody for another year.

Built for bowlers, by bowlers

One National tournament every March, a different Host Location each year, and a tradition that reaches back to 1947.

A tradition older than JANBA

The National tournament began under the JACL, 28 years before JANBA was founded.
